Burmese Blue Sapphire

What Makes Burmese Blue Sapphires Stand Out?

When we talk about Neelam, Burmese blue sapphire stands out as one of the most premium varieties of this gemstone and it's coveted for its rarity and a deep blue colour that catches everyone’s attention. These are sourced from the Mogok stone tract of the Mandalay region in Burma (Myanmar), which has a reputation for producing one of the finest sapphires in the world, and Blue sapphires count for less than 10% of the total sapphires produced from these mines, adding to the value these stones hold. This region is famous for its rich mines producing not only the best-quality Neelam gemstones but also the top-grade Ruby stones (Burmese rubies). Renowned for its stunning colour, exclusivity, and astrological significance, this gemstone holds a prestigious place in the world of precious stones.

Key Difference between Burmese Blue Sapphire and Blue Sapphire from Other Origins

Blue sapphires found in Burma are famous for their distinct deep ink blue colour, often with very faint violet undertones. These stones have a deeper saturation compared to sapphires mined from other regions. The geological conditions of old mines from Burma are such that they produce the finest-quality sapphires across the world, including the Rubies sourced from this region, famous as Pigoen blood red Rubies. These stones are renowned worldwide for carrying the tag of rare and exclusive sapphires, which makes them especially special for gemstone collectors across the world.

Factors Affecting Burmese Blue Sapphire Price & Quality

Buying a blue sapphire is exciting, but how do you ensure you are getting one of high quality?

For years, Burmese blue sapphires have been famous for their stunning beauty, the deepest of the colour that everyone desires, and top-notch quality with coveted rarity, capturing the interest of gemstone enthusiasts worldwide. To make sure that you are not being misled, ensure that a premium-quality sapphire is what you are investing in by looking at the following fundamental parameters:

The Perfect Colour

The hallmark of a top-class Burmese blue sapphire is its exceptional colour. The best quality Burmese blue sapphires have the following colour traits:

• Rich, Vibrant Blue: The stone would have a remarkable, deep ink-blue colour that will catch your eye in an instant, perfectly complementing every piece of jewellery that it sits in.
• Even Colouration: The evenness of the colour of the gemstone is the main factor. It should have a uniform colour all over, with no parts of it being faint or white.
• Optimal Saturation: The colour of the gemstone should be deep, or in other words, it should be intense, but not so dark that it appears black or too light that it lacks vibrancy.

Some of the most popular Burmese blue sapphires are dark blue and royal blue ones, which are appreciated for their deep yet vibrant colour. What makes these sapphires attractive is their deep saturation and the way they really sparkle under the light.

The Right Cut

A perfect cut is the main thing that allows blue sapphires to express their natural charm and shine at their best. Unlike diamonds, Burmese blue sapphires are not mass-produced, in fact they are very rare, and therefore the skill of the sculptor tends to be a vital point. Find out the key aspects to consider

• Symmetry: A well-cut stone that is not bent or leaning from one side to the other will reflect light in an even manner.
• Proportions: The cutting angles should be just right; not too deep or too shallow, for the best light reflection and sparkle.
• Polish: A good-quality polish gives a mirror-like finish, thus enabling the stone to reach the heights of its luster.

A Burmese Neelam stone that has been properly trimmed will appear shiny and vivacious, whereas a badly cut sapphire will appear dim and dead.

Impact of Clarity

Unlike diamonds, almost all Burmese blue sapphires have natural inclusions that serve as clear indicators of their natural origin. Inclusions are common in sapphires, but high-quality sapphires should have no visible flaws that would belittle their beauty. The purer the stone is, the higher price tag it comes with.

Carat Weight

The carat weight of a Burmese blue sapphire is one of the aspects that decide its price, but it is not the only vital factor. A well-cut, vibrant 2-carat sapphire can be more valuable than a larger, poorly cut, or duller stone. The ideal gemstone is one that balances the four key factors: size, colour, clarity, and cut.

Based on the fact that whether it’s a blue sapphire ring, necklace, bracelet, or pair of earrings, all are capable of maintaining their brilliance only with some extra care.
