Opal Stone (Dudhiya Pathar)

What is Opal Stone (Doodhiya Patthar)?

Opal stone is a silicate mineral with a high water content. As light strikes it, tiny silica spheres concealed within this stone scatter it, producing a breathtaking display of colours, including red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Opalescence, or "the fire of the Opal", is a common name for this natural phenomenon, adding a subtle hint of magic to the gem.

Known fondly as Doodhiya Patthar in many parts of India, Opal stone gets its name from the Greek word Opallus, which means "to see a change". And it truly lives up to that name. With its milky white appearance and rainbow-like shimmer, Opal truly represents nature's way of painting a miniature sky inside a gemstone, one that keeps changing and revealing something new with every glance.

Factors Affecting Opal Stone Price & Quality

Not all opal stones are the same; and neither is their price. From the intensity of their fire flashes to the region they come from, each factor plays a role in deciding how much an Opal is worth. Let us now explore what truly influences the opal stone price in detail:

Colour and Fire: The most prized white opal stones are those with a pure milky white base and a vibrant play of colours, often called Opal fire. The brighter and more vivid the colour flashes, the more powerful and valuable the opal stone. A double fire Opal, which shows colourful flashes on both sides, is considered the rarest and most precious variety.

• Origin:Where an Opal comes from greatly impacts its price. About 95% of the world’s finest fire opals come from Australia, especially from Lightning Ridge. Other sources include Mexico, Ethiopia, and the USA, but Australian Opals are usually considered the gold standard, owing to their rich iridescence and unique patterns.
• Cut: Opals are usually cut into smooth, domed shapes known as cabochons, which bring out the stone’s natural colour play. A well-cut fire opal looks more brilliant and is priced higher, while poorly cut stones often appear dull and are less valuable.
• Clarity: Top-quality Opals are semi-transparent to opaque, with minimal inclusions or cracks. While some natural flaws may occur, cleaner stones are rare to come across and hence, fetch a higher price. Visible cloudiness or fractures in an opal stone can reduce both its appearance and value.
• Treatments: Natural, untreated fire Opals are the most valued. Many stones on the market are treated to improve colour or clarity, but untreated ones with natural fire are considered more authentic and hold higher worth.
• Carat Weight:As with most gemstones, Opal price per carat or ratti rises with size of the stone. But, keep in mind that size isn’t everything! A smaller Opal with intense fire and clarity can easily be more valuable than a larger stone with dull colour play. Overall quality of a gemstone always matters more than weight alone.

Maintenance & Cleaning of Opal Stone Jewellery

Opal stones are known for their glowing beauty, but they are also one of the most delicate gemstones you can own. Their high water content and soft surface make them sensitive to heat, dryness, and rough handling. With just a little care though, your Opal ring or bracelet can remain just as radiant for years.

Cleaning and Caring Tips

• Always use a mild detergent and room-temperature water to clean Opal jewellery. Gently wipe with a soft cloth afterwards.
• Opals are highly porous in nature. Hence, avoid soaking them in water for prolonged durations, as water can seep into the layers, causing the stone to swell up at times.
• Never use ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals, acids or oils. A soft piece of silky cloth or facial tissue works well for a quick clean.
• It is best to remove your opal jewellery before long hot showers, or doing household chores like doing the dishes.
• Opals stones are soft and can chip at corners or edges if hit repeatedly. So, avoid wearing opal stone rings during gardening or strenuous activities.
• Opals are sensitive to dryness and heat. Long exposure to heat can cause the stone to crack or lose its natural moisture

Storage Guidelines

• Store your Opal in a padded cloth pouch, ideally in a cool, dark place. Avoid air-tight lockers with zero humidity.
• For long-term storage, wrap the stone in cotton wool with a few drops of water, place it in a sealed plastic bag, and keep it in a humid environment.

Pro Tip: If your Opal stone looks dry or dull, place it in lukewarm water for 15 minutes once a year. This trick will help refresh its moisture naturally.

Fun fact: Some jewellers place a glass of water in their display cabinets to keep Opal stones hydrated under hot lights.

Whether it's your everyday opal ring or a special occasion bracelet, a little attention every now and then can go a long way in preserving its natural charm.
